From May 1-9, 2023, the NRC’s International Regulatory Development Partnership conducted a virtual workshop for Jordan’s Energy & Minerals Regulatory Commission (EMRC). The overall purpose of the workshop was to provide EMRC with technical training in the area of radiation protection inspection activities for the Jordan Research & Training Reactor (JRTR). Several of the workshop participants asked insightful questions that indicated strong interest and engagement in the subject matter.
The topics presented were tailored to EMRC needs – specifically, AdSTM subject matter experts summarized information from the JRTR Final Safety Analysis Report and Operational Technical Specifications, and provided comments on inspection procedures and checklists provided by EMRC. Also discussed during this workshop were relevant U.S.NRC inspection procedures and recent research reactor incidents related to fuel handling at The National Institute of Standards and Technology and The University of Texas.
At the conclusion of this virtual workshop, EMRC management expressed great interest in conducting an on-site workshop in Jordan. This activity is tentatively scheduled for the fall of 2023 and will be focused on the development of radiation inspection capabilities for the JRTR.
