Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) Workshop for FNRBA in Cape Town

During the week of May 18-22, 2015, the NRC’s IRDP conducted a Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) Workshop for the Seventh meeting of the FNRBA thematic working group on regulatory infrastructure for nuclear power plants (TWG3-NPPs) in Cape Town, South Africa. The workshop covered the general contents and uses of PRAs for nuclear power plants. At the request of the participants, the instructors presented aspects of fire PRA and risk-informed decision making. The scheduled content of the workshop included risk assessment bases, PRA basics, event tree basics, fault tree basics, component failure data, human reliability analyses, sequence quantification, Level 2 PRA and severe accident progression, Level 3 PRA, seismic PRA, wind/sand storm PRA. In addition, the participants toured the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station. There were 18 participants in the workshop from the countries of Burkina Faso, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Kenya, Libya, Mauritanie, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sudan, Tanzania, Tunisia, and South Africa.
