On March 25th and 26th, 2013, Scott Newberry, Dr. Charles Miller, and David Fischer taught a Fundamentals of Reactor Safety (FORS) course in Pretoria, South Africa for the National Nuclear Regulator (NNR) of South Africa. The FORS course provided NNR staff with an overview of the key technical concepts governing nuclear safety. It included the basics of nuclear energy and radiation; fundamentals of reactor design and operation; postulated accidents; the potential extent of public health effects, the design and operational safeguards to prevent radiation releases; and the provisions for emergency response.
