Design and Construction Codes and Standards Workshop for CNCAN in Romania

The IRDP U.S. industry Design and Construction Codes and Standards Workshop was conducted from July 25 to July 29, 2016 at the offices of the National Commission for Nuclear Activities Control (CNCAN) in Bucharest, Romania. The audience was composed of members of the CNCAN regulatory staff, CNCAN university student interns, members of the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant staff, and staff from the Centre of Technology and Engineering for Nuclear Projects. During the workshop, AdSTM instructors, Gene Imbro and Bob Gramm, addressed the following topics: Introduction to design and construction codes and standards, NRC regulations related to codes and standards, and codes and standards related to the functional areas of Quality Assurance, Mechanical Systems and Components, Instrumentation and Control, Electrical Power Distribution Systems, and Civil/Structural encompassing areas of design and construction. The Workshop emphasized the importance of U.S. industry codes and standards when performing regulatory reviews and inspections of nuclear facilities during the design and construction phases. The Workshop included interactive discussions between the participants regarding the application of industry codes and standards to the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plants. Participation during the workshop was exceptional as the participants shared valuable insights and comments from their diverse perspectives, both as a regulator and as a licensee. The participants provided positive feedback on the quality and practical usefulness of the workshop.
